Weingut Neumeister

Weingut Neumeister is one of the very well-known premium wineries in the south of Austria (Straden/Styria), and is part of the STK group (Steirische Terroir- und Klassikweingüter). This quality seal is a protected trademark, which is further divided in Premium Cru STK and Grand Cru STK (find more details below).

Only the grapes from the best located sites around are processed, and the Neumeister family is aware of environmental issues and is currently in a change process to organic farming. No herbicides are used, and each variety is treated individually depending on its specific needs, which leads to fantastic wines. Three of them I want to present  enclosed.

If you have the chance to visit the area personally and want to enjoy outstanding food as well as great wine, you should give the Saziani Stub'n a try! The restaurant also belongs to the Neumeister family, and has won several awards from Gault Millau and Falstaff.

Klausen Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (Premium Cru)
One of my most favorite variety - processed in perfection. Color yellow-green, some herbs, fruity, gooseberry, a hint of citrus and even some honey in the aftertase. Won several awards. Outstanding!!

Pinot Noir Klausen 2012
Barrique
Red berries, fruity, a bit of spices, rasperry, wild strawberry, dried herbs. Juicy, elegant. Food friendly, won several awards.

Cuvee de Merin 2012
Zweigelt/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon, Barrique
Dark ruby red, orange, amarena cherry, sweet tanine, a bit of black currant. Moderate, fleshy, smooth finish. Food friendly, won several awards.

Sites and Varieties

Essential for high-quality offerings are vineyards located on the best sites in and around Straden: Saziani, Moarfeitl, Steintal and Klausen. Overall, 36 hectares are processed, 31 hectares cultivated by ourselves and 5 hectares farmed by contract grape growers around Straden.

These vineyards feature the varieties that are typical of Southeast Styria:

Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Morillon and Traminer as well as Zweigelt and Pinot Noir.

Erste STK Lage (Premier Cru STK)

These are made from grapes picked late in the season and sourced from the most valuable sites of the STK wineries. They are vinified individually and according to varietal characteristics and are aged long enough to produce excellent focus and expansive nuances, with the potential to age well for many years.

Große STK Lage (Grand Cru STK)

The grapes for these wines thive in vineyards with most favorable microclimates. Processing with long maturation times aims at the optimum development of terroir notes and minerality. Wines of the category Große STK Lage offer complex aromas and flavors, possess their own distinctive character and will have a huge life ahead.
